In a few days, we’ll be celebrating Independence Day, July 4th. It will be 244 years of freedom, but it doesn’t feel that way for some of us. Freedom is the power to act and speak as one wants without hindrance or restraint. Another definition is the quality or state of being exempt or released from something burdensome. One of the Bible’s definitions: is Galatians 5:1 “For freedom, Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit to the yoke of bondage.” Another Bible passage on freedom is John 8:32 “And you will know the truth, and the truth shall set you free.” Truth is in knowing what roadmaps there are for guidance, and this starts with an open mind and a ready willingness to embrace the truth when facing it.
As July 4th draws near and observing the reality of the lives of some of us gives cause to pause and ask tough questions, starting with how have we gotten here? The harder question is, where do we go from here? I have no suggestion, and I wish I could offer some insight into arriving at the right answer, but I would be remiss or delusional even to attempt such a feat? So, as we move forward, that day should be viewed beyond barbecues, getting together with those we are familiar or comfortable with, but it’s a time for soul searching if we are to succeed as a people? What do you think?
Footnote: As one who believes that whatever state we are in, no one should dictate our response but us; with this in mind, I projected imagery of strong, beautiful women whose expressions conflict with the subject matter. We must always remain true to who we are no matter the circumstances; we are the essence of light and beauty!
