What is love today between two consenting adults?
Is it rapturous emotions coupled with lust and fuel by rage?
Or is it tender exchanges channeled through understanding with care?
What is love today between two consenting adults?
Is it deceit and trickery masked by desire and distrust?
Or is it having honesty, honor, decency, and trust?
One doing to another as one would have done to them?
What is love today between two consenting adults?
Is it twisted desires overshadowed by the unchangeable wrongs of one’s
yesterday?
However, now it’s another’s hell to pay?
What is love between two consenting adults?
Isn’t it the usual care, a hand to hold, or laughter to cheer?
Isn’t it when the heart feels bare knowing someone who truly cares?
What is love today between two consenting adults?
Is it shattered lives seeking their whole within the broken sphere of things?
What is love today between two consenting adults?
What is love today….what is love?

I wrote this poem several years ago, and it was one of the more difficult because I’ve hopelessly believed that there is always a rainbow behind every dark cloud. Unfortunately, life’s harsh reality forced an acceptance of what is and not what is hoped for. However, with acceptance, it becomes easier to pull from those lessons learned to create a conducive state of being with peace.
